Scholastic Chess has enjoyed explosive growth in recent years. Studies have shown chess improves academic performance, concentration, logical thinking, and social skills. The Harelson Chess Team is open to all students who, at minimum, have learned the basics of chess including board setup and moving the pieces, and the desire to use and improve their chess skills by competing in individual and team — league, state, and/or national — tournaments.
Majority of competitions are held on Saturdays. Team members are encouraged to attend all meetings. Sets, boards, and clocks will be provided. The first 30 minutes will comprise instructions and strategies. During the last 30 minutes, students will play a game, applying what they've learned. The team requests one time, non-refundable $30 membership per student for the 2013-2014 school year. AZ State Tax Credit Donation – dollar for dollar state tax credit — is applicable.
